Growing in Christian Discipleship: 5 Steps to Christian Maturity

Growth is a natural part of life. Humans, plants, animals, and all manner of species from the time of conception until death experience growth in some form. As Christians, we are instructed through the writings of the apostles to grow

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. 2 Peter 3:18 (KJV)

This challenge to grow is a noble concept in the hearts of many Christians; however, many are frustrated in their pursuit of personal growth in their faith and in their walk with Christ. Personal growth can be challenging and rewarding. It is an ongoing process in the life of the Christian. To rise to the challenge, the Christian has to overcome faulty self-perception, the opinions of others, and the lies that the enemy may bring to the mind. In this post, we want to offer five practical steps that Christians can employ to stimulate personal growth in their lives and in their walk with Christ.

Fear the Lord. In the book of Proverbs, it tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. If you want to grow, you must have a respect and reverence for God, His Word, and His Standards. Without these, you will not have the proper perspective and passion for personal growth.

Feed on the Word of God. The Bible is God's Word to us. If you want to grow, it has to be done through the study of the Word and through the application of what is contained. There are many Christians who do not know the Bible, which leads to depression, discouragement, and disappointment in their walks with the Lord. The Bible helps you to understand God, understand His promises, and understand the endless possibilities that can be found through a relationship with Him.

Faithfully Seek the Lord in Prayer. Pray, Pray, and Pray some more. Prayer is such a valuable resource and tool in personal growth. Once you get past praying for more stuff, you will be blessed by it tremendously. Prayer increases your spiritual awareness. It is during prayer that the Holy Spirit can bring you peace, comfort, joy, and direction for your life. No wonder Jesus said that men should always pray and not faint. Do not give up on prayer because you do not see immediate results, for it will have eternal rewards.

Fellowship with Other Christians. Though problems and frictions can arise with other Christians, fellowship is a necessary tool for personal growth. Christians can impart faith, life, and wisdom to one another. Just because someone in the local church has offended you or hurt you, do not separate yourself. There is a good chance that there are others among you who will be a blessing in your life, contributing to your personal enrichment in the Lord.

Fast for Personal Discipline. There is much controversy today about the place of fasting in the Christian walk. Regardless of the debate, fasting can prove to be useful in personal growth. Fasting aids the believer in exercising self-control. Prayer along with fasting provides a unique combination of denial and dedication. As one puts off the bodies craving, he satiates his spiritual hunger because Jesus said that those who had a hunger and thirst for righteousness (personal spiritual growth) would be filled.

Again, personal growth does require endurance and determination. However, it can be a consistent element in your life. Remember, Paul said that we could do all things through Christ who gives us strength. God wants you to grow. So, if you want to grow, you can grow. He will help you. Those that may feel like you have tried and nothing seems to work KEEP TRYING! He will help you. He said that He would not leave you or forsake you.

Don’t Stop Believing

Everything created has a beginning and an end. We expect things at some point in time to stop. However, as Christians, there is something that we cannot ever stop doing; that is, we cannot stop believing in our God. Foundational to the Christian life is the ability to have faith; that is, believe. Without a belief in the work of God through Jesus Christ, one cannot enter into salvation. Moreover, the obtained salvation cannot be maintained without an ever growing faith, hope, and belief in God. Our belief in God has to go beyond a general belief in His existence. It has to expand to a solid belief in His power and ability to move on our behalf. Here  are  3  reasons why a Christian must not stop  believing in God (through prayers) who will walk with them daily: 1. We are instructed to pray. Jesus taught on numerous occasions concerning prayer. He said that we are to always pray and not faint. The parable He used demonstrated that even though we may have to pray about a situation mor

Watching Your Lifestyle

Though many do not like to talk about it, death is a part of man’s existence. It is something that everyone will have to face. Yet, the Christian has hope in Christ that when we depart from this life, we will live again forever with Him. However, numerous individuals live without any regard for their eternal destination.   The Christian has to be on the watch. This is demonstrated in paying attention your lifestyle, manner, and conduct. There are Christians who live as if there is no standard of living for them after they have received Christ. Each of these groups of people are not prepared for their date with destiny; that is, the moment that they will stand before the judgment seat of God and of Christ.                Because of the sure promises of scripture, we must  all prepare (watch) to meet Christ at His return or at our departure from this life. Therefore, we want to give three things that we can do to be prepared for our entrance into eternity. 1. Clothe Ourselves - In

God Can Turn It Around

God is the author of life. His very words contain creative power. When He created the earth, He did it through the power of His famous words, “Let there be…” Until this present day, all things that were set in motion remain by the power of His word. From other scriptures, we discover that aside from the power of His words, God’s thoughts and intents will certainly happen. In the book of Isaiah, God declares, The Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand (Isaiah 14:24) Whatever the will of the Lord is shall surely happen. Without even speaking, if God thinks or purposes to do something, it will happen. Thus, we  understand that God possesses all power.            Because of the awesome power of God, He can turn around the unclean things of our lives. The Book of Job asks, “Who can bring a clean out of an unclean?” – God can. God brings impossible things to fruition. The Bible aboun
